Convert your old router into a WiFi repeater using dd-wrt

I had an issue getting decent WiFi coverage in part of my apartment. I had an old router lying around and I remembered hearing something about dd-wrt. I wondered if it could help, and sure enough it did. Here are the steps to turn an old router into a useful WiFi repeater:

  1. Download dd-wrt firmware for your router. I had an old Cisco E1000v2 so I used this binary.
  2. Follow the steps listed here. (Don't forget to change the IP address of your old router so that it doesn't conflict with the gateway address of your existing router!)
  3. Voila! You now have a wireless repeater.
